Visiting Kampong Chhnang province

Kampong Chhnang province lies in the center of Cambodia and is bordered by Kampong Thom on the north, Kampong Speu on the south, Kampong Cham on the east and Pursat on the west. Just 91 kilometers away from Phnom Penh, this province is one of the most fertile regions of Cambodia. Being close to Tonle Sap Lake, the populations of Kampong Chhnang province are predominantly engaged in fishery and maintaining rice plantations. This is observed if one visits the capital of this province, a river port town, worth visiting. Most people here are engaged with fishery. To visit this province, one can use national highway number 5 that connects it with Phnom Penh. Air-conditioned luxury bus services have been introduced recently and one can avail them to visit this town. There are some sightseeing spots that the tourists should not miss and there are some decent hotels where one can retire for the night. Do not forget to check out on the local delicacies while you are there. For some breathtaking scenery, you should try out the bullet boats that play between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. One can also rent motorized boats to explore the Tonle Sap River. Such boats cost approximately $15 per hour. You can also opt in for the small boats (non-motorized) and they cost approximately 6,000 Riel per hour. While touring this city, do not miss out the recently developed river walkway. The locals visit this spot in the evening to socialize and spend their leisure time.

Geography: Kampong Chhnang province is located close to the geographical middle of Cambodia and it borders Kampong Thom along with the lake Tonle Sap on the north, Kampong Speu to the south, Kampong Cham along with Kandal on the east and Pursat on the west. There are hardly any forests except in the southwest. This province is rich in alluvial soil and has lots of fisheries and rice plantations. The borderline on the southwest is on the hillside of one of the highest mountains of Cambodia, Phnom Aoral, which has an altitude of 1813m.

Population: As of 2007, Kampong Chhnang has a population of 538,163 persons and this accounts for 3.6% of the total population of Cambodia. This includes 259,347 males and 278,816 females. Roughly 85.5% (407,453) of its population is engaged in farming. Of the remainder, 6% (29,250) are fishermen, 7.5% (35,076) are traders and the remaining 1% (4,783) consists of government officers.

Climate: Kampong Chhnang has a warm climate and one can find sunny weather throughout the year. The average temperature of this province is about 27ยบ Celsius. The summer season is from March to May, monsoon from May to October and winter from November to March.

Economy: The economy of Kampong Chhnang consists basically of rice, fishery and fruit cropping along with several garment factories. Its rural households depend on agriculture and related sub-sectors.

Get in and out: One can take the air-conditioned bus service that runs to and from Phnom Penh to reach Kampong Chhnang. Apart from that, one can also avail of share taxis.
